Critical Analysis
Marc Jacobs reflects the zeitgeist or the spirit of the time because he was able to corporate many creative ideas during the time he was inspired by in his many designs and collection. One of the first periods he was influences by was the 70’s period, which he was growing up in. For examples, music bands like Sonic Youth and Pachelbel’s Canon has contributed to his creativity in design. Later on, the grunge era in the 90’s inspired first grunge collection for Perry Ellis. Not only he was inspired to designing a line but he was also inspired to dress that way as well. After introducing his collection, Marc Jacobs was dismissed from Perry Ellis because it gave him many negatives review from the company.
Marc Jacobs’s design was influenced by designers like Halston, Coco Chanel, and Yves Saint Lauren. Halston designs represent more of a New York chic during his time. With his inspiration, Marc Jacobs corporate Halston ideas in his Fall 2007 collection. As for Coco Chanel, she was known for her ladylike classic look. In Marc Jacobs’s spring 2008 collection, he designed many classic coats inspired by Coco Chanel. During Louis Vuitton falls 2009 collection, Marc Jacobs corporate Yves Saint Lauren’s sensual frivolity of the 1980’s in his designs. “Jacobs displays an ironic slant and perhaps a sense of enduring optimism by using over the top symbols of the 1980’s at a time of economic recession” (Palomo-Lovinski).

Analysis of Future Trends
(Stylesight)
Marc Jacobs did influence a significant trend that will continue into the future. He was known very much for his street wears. According to Marc Jacobs, his streetwise aesthetics were “a little preppie, a little grungy, a little couture” (WWD). His grunge design has won the heart of many women during that time period, but also the modern days. Many of Marc Jacobs’s designs personalities were bold colors, chic, classic, playful, colorful, simple and light.
Marc Jacobs has influences many designers, including Miuccia Prada and Phillip Lim, just to name a few. Many of Prada’s designs were influenced by the use of fabrics and shapes of Marc Jacobs’s grunge collection to emphasize the sexuality of a women’s body. In Phillip Lim’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection he uses pastel colors and floral embellishment in a way of a street wear playful chic. Similar to Marc Jacobs’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection, where Marc Jacobs uses light colors and light materials making the outfit look very comfortable.
Even till today, Marc Jacob is still a very talented designer; not only because he received many rewards as a young fashion designers, but he is still able to corporate his design into a wearable street style. From many great designers like Perry Ellis to Louis Vuitton, or even just a girl on the street, Marc Jacobs’s signature collection of his work is widely known. No matter what challenges he face, Marc Jacobs was able to get back to the top; therefore, I believe that he did create a lasting “signature” silhouette in the fashion history.
